If you’re one of our out-of-town or international couples hopping on a plane to have the best day of your life in NYC, there’s one question that almost always comes up: How the hell do I fly with my wedding dress?
It’s easily one of the most common things couples ask us, and for good reason. You’ve spent months dreaming about this outfit, and now it has to survive airport chaos, overhead bins, and customs?!
The good news is: we’ve helped hundreds of couples do this before, and we’ve learned every trick in the book for getting your wedding attire safely from your closet to your NYC hotel (and looking amazing when you get there).
Yes, absolutely, and you should.
Your wedding dress counts as a carry-on item on most airlines, which means it’s allowed to come right onto the plane with you. Checking it with your luggage might sound tempting if you’re juggling a million bags, but trust us… that’s a recipe for regret. Checked bags get tossed, stacked, and sometimes sent to the wrong city. You don’t want your wedding day depending on airport reunions and “lost luggage” claims.
Many larger planes (especially on longer routes or international flights) have a hanging closet onboard for crew and first-class passengers. They’re often happy to make space for a wedding dress if you ask nicely. Flight attendants tend to have soft spots for wedding stories, so give them your best “I’m getting married in NYC tomorrow” smile, and you might just get VIP treatment for your gown.
Carry. It. On.
Always!
Your wedding dress is not the time to trust airline baggage handlers with your happily ever after. If it fits in a garment bag, bring it as your carry-on item. If it’s huge or layered, get a foldable garment bag that can be gently tucked into the overhead compartment. Some airlines are flexible when they see what it is.
First, you’ll want a breathable garment bag (nothing plastic or too stiff). Hanging the dress is ideal, but if you have to fold it, make sure there’s soft tissue or a clean cotton sheet between layers to prevent creasing.
If you’re traveling in economy and there’s no closet, fold the bag carefully and lay it flat in the overhead bin. Ask the flight attendant to help – they are pros at puzzle-packing.
When you land, hang your dress up right away. Most hotels have steamers, or you can bring a travel-sized one (check it’s allowed in your luggage). Even just hanging it in a steamy bathroom for twenty minutes works wonders.
If your dress has a train, keep it loosely rolled inside the garment bag instead of folding it sharply. It’ll save you from dealing with deep creases later. And don’t forget to pack your hanger – hotels always have the wrong kind.

Not all garment bags are created equal. You want something that protects your dress and doesn’t wrinkle it beyond recognition. After helping hundreds of couples fly with their wedding outfits, here are a few we actually love — from practical to high-end to totally personalized.
If your gown is huge, consider a wedding dress travel box. They’re designed to meet carry-on size limits and are way less awkward than wrestling with a floor-length garment bag in Terminal 4.
Ah yes, the supporting cast of your outfit. Veils, jewelry, shoes, and accessories deserve some attention too, especially since they’re delicate and easy to misplace mid-travel.
Roll (don’t fold!) your veil and place it in a long, narrow box or a flat garment bag pocket. If it’s especially fine or detailed, sandwich it between layers of tissue paper. And yes, your veil can also go in your carry-on. It weighs nothing and takes up barely any space.
Always keep it with you in your personal item, not checked luggage. The last thing you want is your grandmother’s earrings in a missing suitcase. Use a travel jewelry case or a small pouch with compartments so everything stays tangle-free and easy to find.
Wrap shoes in a cloth bag to keep them clean and tuck them into your carry-on if space allows. Accessories like belts, gloves, or hairpieces can go in small mesh bags inside your tote so you can find them quickly once you arrive.
And if your outfit includes something fragile (like a flower crown or headpiece), protect it in a small box or even your lap during the flight. Yes, seriously. Flight attendants have seen stranger things.
Flying across borders? You’ll want to check your airline’s exact carry-on policy, because size limits vary. European and budget airlines tend to be stricter, while some U.S. carriers will work with you if you explain it’s a wedding dress.
If your flight has a connection, especially with a smaller regional aircraft, double-check that both legs allow the same carry-on size. The last thing you want is to board your connecting flight and find out your dress suddenly doesn’t fit.
A smart backup plan: fold the dress inside a lightweight travel box or duffel that meets carry-on requirements. That way, even if it doesn’t hang, you can keep it with you at all times.
You can, but we don’t recommend it unless it’s absolutely necessary. Shipping a wedding dress means trusting couriers, customs, and weather delays with one of the most important items of your life. It’s a big risk for something you can easily keep by your side.
If you’re eloping internationally and someone can safely receive and store it, that’s one thing. Otherwise, the safest option is still to bring it on the plane yourself.
Even the most careful packing job will leave a few wrinkles; it’s inevitable. Don’t worry! They’re easy to handle.
Hang the dress as soon as you arrive and let gravity do its thing. Then, use a handheld steamer on a low setting, or ask your hotel if they can help with professional pressing. For delicate fabrics like silk or tulle, use a cool setting or cover the steamer with a towel to avoid water spots.
If you’re working with our team, we’ll make sure you know where to find a reliable local service.
Same rules apply. Suits, jumpsuits, or shorter dresses travel even easier. Fold them neatly into a garment bag, keep them in your carry-on, and you’re golden. Some hotels will even press them for free if you ask nicely (remember: a little pre-wedding charm goes a long way).
Here’s the fun part: Once you’ve eloped, your dress doesn’t need to be babied anymore. You can fold it carefully in your suitcase, or – our favorite move – wear it again for your honeymoon photos.
